Tanya Pluth: The Tunes
Saving Graces
(Tanya Pluth)
2006-04
Before my Grandma died, my Dad recorded some conversations with her. That's where the verse in this song about "Papa never said that much. . ." comes from (not direct qoutes, but close. . .)
Thinking much about generations and how despite all the attempts to the contrary, people still, from one generation to the next, are able to pass on things like love, wisdom, commitment to basic human dignity, and hope.
Ginny’s in the kitchen
Stirring up Shirley temples for the children
7-up and cherries, the only treat today
There’s nothing easy now
Not paying the rent
Finding dinner in an empty cabinet
She turns on the tv to see where hope went
Head in her hands and her heart alone
She seeks one truth she can hold
This world is full of hiding places
Lost souls and saving graces
Take these gifts and bear them forward
Through the battles, through the wars
Papa never said that much
At least not in public
Small town had big ears
And a tight heavy fist
He’s a man of few words
And even less in English
But he had at least one gift to give
And he gave it to his next of kin
When he taught them this
All of you for generations
Forward and behind
Keepers of the legacy
You walk a fine line
Seeking refuge from suffering
In the promise of time
Laying hope on the children and the family line
